If I was the mayor of Porto ......

Hope you are all having an excellent week, despite the rain that I can see from my window at the moment. This week's blog entry is an idea from what I had to do for my French homework. If you were the mayor of Porto what would you change? What would you use your special powers to do?

See next Monday

Paul

And after that Porto would be perfect.

Porto is a beautiful city but not everything is perfect and so there are some details that must be worked so that it becomes an even better place to live.

As the mayor of Porto I would try to find out the best solution to the Bolhão market, because it is a fantastic place that must be preserved at all cost. How? Well, first of all, some improvement work would have to be done in the building so that it might be a secure and comfortable place to work and to be visited. Bolhão market is a symbol of Porto and its tradition and magic should be respected.

If I was the city’s mayor I would also try to increase the number of green spaces in Porto. Parque da Cidade is wonderful however it is not enough. After all, not everyone can go there as often as they would like, because it is not close to those who live far from Avenida da Boavista. Aliados is another area of Porto that would receive my full attention. Why? Because it needs to be a more colourful place as it is a very gray one nowadays. The trees that are there are not enough.

To create more museums and cultural places would be another item in my list. Streets like Miguel Bombarda are important to the city, because it attract tourists and young people to areas that were becoming abandoned.

A lot more things could and should be done in Porto, but I like living here.

See you on Monday.

Hi everyone,

As you know, I live in Maia, so I have more to say about “If I were the Mayor of Maia” than “If I were the Mayor of Porto”!

Anyway, as Porto is the capital of the North Portugal, I have some things that I would improve and others that I change.

For instance, If I were the Mayor of Porto, I would promote more cultural events in my city, because almost all events occurs in Lisbon, like “Cirque du Soleil”, Rock Concerts, the big Theatre Productions and so on. That would attract more tourists and inhabitants to Porto life.

If I were the Mayor of Porto I would also put every traffic sign and information translated in English because of the foreigner people that visit the city. It may seems irrelevant but it’s very important. No ones understand our language and for foreigners is quit difficult to move in Porto as they have no information in English.

I also agree with the points presented by Claudia. Porto has lots of beautiful places that are not very well treated.

See you next Monday. Have a nice weekend.

Hi everybody
Claudia and Rita wrote about some subjects which are my points of view too.
Furthermore, If i were the major of Porto I would like to create a place where homelesses could sleep during the coldest nights. Secondly, I’ll put much more flowers in the gardens. Finally, I would like to involve local people on cultural activities which are really rarely when we compare with other cities.

Now I need to go. See you on Monday

Hi everyone!

First of all, I must say that I do not like politics very much… I know for sure that there are many serious people in politics, but I really do think that some part of the politicians is only interested in winning elections by doing some promises that tend to be forgotten and not completely fulfilled. Therefore, I will only pretend for a minute that I am mayor of Porto because Paul asked me to. :)

Well, if I was the mayor of Porto I would try to improve the area near Douro river, along the marginal road. Despite of all the improvement works have been done in the last years, I think people deserve more appropriate spaces to see the river, and also more attractions nearby.

As the mayor of Porto I would also give some attention to old buildings, particularly to those located in Ribeira. I think Porto downtown has many constructions with many years that need immediate attention in order to restore the splendour of that city area.

In addition, if I was the mayor of Porto I would concentrate my efforts in cleaning all the graffiti painted in the building walls. It is not a recent thing, but we keep seeing enormous and ugly graffities ruining the front of the buildings.

So… for a better and clean city, vote Luís!

See you on Monday!

Joana, yes I agree with you, but don’t tell anyone because someday I will be the Mayor of Porto!!!

When I won the Porto elections I would give more attention to Education, Economy, New Opportunities, Science and Technology, Health and Environment.
So for the development of everyone, the city and the country, I would:
-EDUCATION: give the opportunity to everyone to study, starting by early childhood education;
-ECONOMY: promote 200 new jobs for tourism guides and 100 for the museums and clearly contracts for everyone and develop agendas which could competitive in a global economy;
-NEW OPPORTUNITIES: create free English courses for Taxi drivers, Shop assistants, Waiters…;
-SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY: invest in scientific research;
-HEALTH CARE: provide a better health care in all Family Health Unities;
-ENERGY and ENVIRONMENT: invest in alternative fuels and renewable energies.

See you later,
Aldora Pinheiro

Hi people,

It is a very interesting topic. I agree with many suggestions described in this post. My contribution is about transport public and houses.

Today, Metro is an excellent transport public but there is a small net of stations. For example, there are many people who lives in Gaia and works in Porto city but there aren’t enough stations in Gaia.

Another suggestion is about houses. It is very expensive to buy a house in Porto downtown. There are many buildings to rebuild. I think that is important a finance support for young people to buy and rebuild houses in Porto downtown.

See you soon.

António Ramos.

Hello,

If I was the mayor of Porto I will change some things. I will recover all ancient houses and buildings, open daily traditional stores, find some solutions to stop cars ”arrumadores”, remove the pigeons from the “praça da liberdade” :), try to create another touristic and cultural ways to increase jobs and disclose our cultural history.
I will like to improve other things but it will be very difficult because I need to change people mentality and it's impossible.

See we later.

Have a nice week.
