Bullfighting

Hello everyone,

Bullfighting is a popular sport in Spain and in some parts of Portugal. I went to a bullfight in Azambuja a few years ago just for the experience. Personally I am not in favour of it. What is your opinion on it?

Bullfighting Opinion By Paulo Barbosa

I’ve never gone to a bullfight arena but I’ve watched lots of bullfights on television, for what I’ve seen and read I don’t accept this spectacle, and others , where an animal is used to satisfy a crowd that scream of happiness with the suffering of an injured animal.

All types of bullfighting cause suffering to the animal “bull” involved, in some how is a fight between a single bull and several men, with horses and weapons, like banderilles and sword.

This spectacle that is a cultural tradition in Spain and Portugal, despite the spectacle are slight different between the two countries, they involve professional performers movement with the goal of appearing graceful and confident, and consist essentially in sticking a series of banderilles into the neck muscle of the bull, causing extremely pain in the bull who bleeds a lot.

The spectacle in Spain concludes with the death the bull by a well placed sword, in Portugal the final consists of a tradition called the “pega”, executed by men called “forcados”, that is somehow very exciting, and for me, if the bullfight only included the “pega” I would accept this spectacle, because it would be a fair competition between five hundred kilos of muscles and a team of eight men trying to demonstrate their extraordinary courage facing the bull.
like everything in the world, there is always two sides with different opinions, and in the case of bullfighting there are too the ones that argue that bullfight is a cultural important tradition, and the opposition groups, where I’m included, that argue that it is a blood sport, because of the suffering of the bull, horses and men during the bullfight, and then shouldn’t be allowed by the governments.

I’m also completely against bullfighting, but I agree with Paulo: if bullfighting was only the “pega” I think that wasn’t so bad. In any case, I think that this kind of horror show should be banned all over the world.

Like my colleagues, I’m completely against bullfighting and all “games” that cause suffering and/or death of the animals.
I’m going to report you one of this terrible games, which FORTUNATELY has finish. It has been happening in my father’s birthplace, based in an old tradition. One cook has been fastened in a paw, by a cord with +/- 50 cm. The competitor men has bought stones and a certain distance, he has cast them against the cook and he who would have got kill the animal, have stayed with its. :(
I hate this kind of games and I refuse me to attend to someone.

As my colleagues I’m completely against bullfight.
I know that in some parts from Portugal and in other countries it is a popular fest and people have another opinion. I understood that we have to respect the other opinion but it’s difficult for me respect people that hurt animals, specialty only for entertainment.

In my opinion, bullfighting is a ridiculous type of show and I think it would be forbidden. I don’t understand how people could be happy to watch an injured animal.
Today, we can find the practice of Bullfighting in some Europeans countries like Portugal, Spain, some cities on southern France and in a several Latin countries like Mexico, or in Brazil with some differences.
I have to admit that there are a lot of people who disagree with me specially defending that bullfighting is a cultural event with historical foundations. So, when I listen these types of arguments, I think what is the problem to change the tradition? Will the society or community poor without bullfighting?

António.
